Sloanebuilt Trailers is committed to designing and manufacturing high-productivity, innovative trailer solutions tailored for Australian conditions. We specialise in navigating complex regulatory landscapes, including Performance-Based Standards (PBS) and national vehicle standards, to deliver trailers that enhance efficiency, safety, and profitability for our clients. Understanding these standards is crucial for operating effectively and legally. This page provides an overview of PBS and general vehicle standards relevant to heavy vehicle operators.

WHAT ARE PERFORMANCE BASED STANDARDS?

Performance-Based Standards (PBS) is a scheme administered by the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) aimed at designing heavy vehicles with improved productivity and safety. Unlike traditional prescriptive regulations that dictate specific dimensions and mass, PBS focuses on how a vehicle performs against a set of safety and infrastructure protection standards.PBS vehicles are designed to:
• Meet 16 stringent safety standards, ensuring they are stable and maneuverable.
• Meet 4 infrastructure protection standards, minimizing wear and tear on roads and bridges. This approach allows for more innovative and optimised vehicle designs, often leading to higher payloads and more efficient operation on approved PBS networks.

KEY BENEFITS OF PBS

HUMBLE BEGINNINGS

Starting from a small factory in Camden in 1970s, Sloanebuilt quickly gained a reputation for manufacturing custom-built tipping bodies. The demand for their high-quality products led to a significant move in 2000 to a larger facility in Smeaton Grange, offering 1,665 cubic meters of factory space. From rigid bins and dog trailers to B-Doubles and Drop Deck Wideners, Sloanebuilt has always focused on meeting the specific needs of its customers.

Increased Productivity

PBS vehicles can often carry significantly more payload per trip compared to conventional vehicles, leading to fewer trips and lower per-tonne operating costs.

Improved Safety

PBS vehicles must pass rigorous safety assessments, often resulting in vehicles that are safer than their conventional counterparts (e.g., better stability, reduced rollover risk).

Enhanced Efficiency

Moving more freight with fewer vehicles reduces fuel consumption and emissions per tonne-kilometre.

Better Road Access

PBS vehicles can gain access to routes on the PBS network that may not be available to general access vehicles, allowing for more direct and efficient journeys.

Environmental Advantages

Fewer truck movements for the same freight task means a reduced carbon footprint and less congestion.

Reduced Road Wear

Despite potentially higher gross masses, PBS vehicles are designed to distribute loads more effectively, often resulting in less impact on road infrastructure

VEHICLE STANDARDS AND COMPLIANCE IN AUSTRALIA

All vehicles operating on Australian roads, including heavy trailers, must comply with a comprehensive set of national vehicle standards. These standards are primarily defined by:
• Australian Design Rules (ADRs): These are national standards for vehicle safety, anti-theft, and emissions. ADRs cover aspects like braking systems, lighting, structural integrity, and occupant protection. New vehicles must comply with the ADRs in force at their date of manufacture.
• Vehicle Standards Bulletins (VSBs): VSBs provide guidance on specific vehicle construction, modification, and maintenance requirements. For example, VSB 6 provides guidance on heavy vehicle modifications.Compliance with these standards is mandatory and ensures that vehicles are safe, environmentally responsible, and fit for purpose. Sloanebuilt Trailers engineers and manufactures all its products to meet or exceed these national requirements, providing peace of mind and ensuring long-term operational viability for our customers.

25 YEARS OF INNOVATIVE SUCCESS

In 2010, Sloanebuilt celebrated a significant milestone—25 years of leadership under the Marano family in the tipping body and trailer manufacturing industry. This milestone was marked by the grand opening of a new 1,620 cubic meter extension to their modern Hartley Road factory in Smeaton Grange, NSW. The event was inaugurated by Camden Mayor, Chris Patterson, and attended by over 200 clients, staff, and special guests. This celebration was not just a testament to the company's longevity but also to its ongoing commitment to innovation and quality.

MAKING A MARK ON MANUFACTURING

For over 35 years, Sloanebuilt has had remarkable growth due to its forward-thinking approach. The company's expansion into a new, purpose-built facility highlights its commitment to the future. This 9-acre facility, is the largest trailer manufacturing facility in Sydney and possibly New South Wales. It features over 36,000 square meters of hardstand area and 15,000 square meters under cover, with four drive-through bays, twin spray booths, a machine shop, a blast booth, a weighbridge, spare parts store, and modern offices. This investment has more than doubled the operation, positioning Sloanebuilt to continue servicing Sydney, and beyond well into the future.

OUR COMMITMENT TO COMPLIANCE

At Sloanebuilt, we integrate compliance into every stage of our design and manufacturing process. Our team stays up-to-date with the latest changes in ADRs, VSBs, and PBS scheme requirements to ensure that every trailer we deliver is fully compliant and optimised for its intended application. Whether you are coming through with a new brand new combination and wanting to achieve PBS compliance for your vehicle, or wanting to make changes to your pre-existing fleet, Sloanebuilt are your top choice for PBS compliance.
