Richard Spiteri, is heading out for the seventh year for the Variety Bash

For the past seven of those, Richard Spiteri, of Elderslie, and his team FiredUp have driven around the country in the event, raising more than $150,000 for the children’s charity Variety.

“Raising money for kids in need and seeing the smiles on their faces – that’s the best part,” Mr Spiteri said.

“The work that Variety do helping disadvantaged children and children with disabilities is just incredible. I’m so happy to be part of an event like this.”

The team left from Brisbane last week and will drive across Queensland and NSW before finishing at Moore Park, Sydney, on Sunday where 150 cars will join them.

Mr Spiteri, a firefighter working throughout the Macarthur region for the past 30 years, formed the group with three other firefighters in 2007.

Mr Spiteri said the area was right behind his campaign to drive a 1974 Chevrolet Silverado across the country.

“Through raffles and fundraisers we raised $16,000. “Local businesses and people from around the area really helped out.

“Every dollar counts and we were very well looked after.”

He thanked the community, particularly Sloanbuilt Trailers, for making the trip possible.

“We could not believe our luck when Fred and Tim Marano from Sloanbuilt showed immediate support in providing their facilities, and they have been very generous in supplying the labour and material to paint our new vehicle,” he said.
